What is Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor

  1. Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser (similar to Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) that locks down the testing environment within Canvas, so students are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading.
  2. Respondus Monitor is a companion product for LockDown Browser that requires students to use a webcam to record themselves during an exam. It is included with the LockDown Browser install and does not need to be installed separately.

How do faculty access Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor settings

  1. Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor is available for use in all Canvas courses
  2. Within the course, click on LockDown Browser on the left menu
  3. If LockDown Browser does not appear on the left menu, then faculty may need to edit the course navigation as outlined in this article: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12933-415257079

How do faculty set up a quiz using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor

Follow the below instruction to setup a quiz to use Respondus LockDown Browser

  1. Login to Canvas
  2. Choose the course that you have configured the quiz within 
  3. Click on "LockDown Browser" from the left menu
  4. On the same screen click on "Drop Down" arrow & click on Modify Settings
  5. Click on the radio button "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam"
  6. Click on Save & Close

Follow the below instructions to setup a quiz to use Respondus LockDown Browser with Monitor

  1. Login to Canvas
  2. Click on Course from the left panel
  3. Click on "LockDown Browser" on the left bottom
  4. On the same screen click on "Drop Down" arrow & click on Modify Settings
  5. Under Monitor Webcam Settings, click on ""Require Respondus Monitor for this exam"
  6. Guide the user as per the Issue
  7. Click on Save & Close

Please note that if you copy course content to a new shell for to use in another semester and have quizzes configured for Respondus LockDown Browser use, you will have to enter the Respondus LockDown configuration section once to re-enable Respondus for the copied quizzes
