When will the New Gradebook be enabled?

New Gradebook was enabled for all Canvas institutions on 18 January 2020.

What features are in the current Gradebook that are not in the New Gradebook?

New Gradebook has parity with the current Gradebook, but some functionality in the current Gradebook has been repurposed:

  • Assignment Details—this feature will be replaced by New Analytics functionality, which provides improved analytics capabilities (see Canvas Studio Priority: Analytics 2).
  • Hide Student Names—this feature has been resolved in the New Gradebook by the Anonymous Grading and Moderated Grading features already implemented in Canvas. (Hiding student names is still available in SpeedGrader, which is a separate feature and not affected by this project.)
  • Treat Ungraded as 0—this feature changes the view of how grades are displayed to instructors in the Gradebook and does not directly affect student grades. This feature is currently still available in the Individual View Gradebook but not in the Grid View Gradebook, which will be resolved in a future release. If you still want to view grades as zeroes in the New Gradebook, apply grades as zeros using the global Missing Policy option or use the Default Grade option for individual assignments. (Please note these options are not retroactive and will only apply to new submissions.)

Can I switch back and forth between the New Gradebook and the Old Gradebook?

You cannot switch back to the current Gradebook if you enable late policies or even manually adjust the labels in the Grade Detail Tray. Once you have done one of these two things, the feature option in the course will not allow you to return to the old Gradebook. Late policies do not transfer to the old Gradebook. In affected courses, the course-level feature option may take up to 1 hour to display the status change.

Can I turn off the Final Grade Override feature option once it’s enabled?

No. The Final Grade Override feature is meant to integrate with the New Gradebook if it’s enabled. If you want to test this feature, only enable the Final Grade Override feature option in the beta environment. Do not enable this feature option in your production environment until you are sure you want to enable it for all instructors.

Will this project fix such and such with Importing or Exporting the Gradebook?

No. It will not. We have a separate project proposed to address all import and export issues with the Gradebook. However, the New Gradebook does support exporting by grading period.

Does this change how we access SpeedGrader from the New Gradebook?

We appreciate your feedback about the New Gradebook! Feedback helps improve our features, and the New Gradebook is no exception. The SpeedGrader link is included in the grade detail tray for each student.

Are there currently any known issues with the New Gradebook?

The majority of significant issues have been resolved for the New Gradebook. However, smaller behaviors may occasionally surface. Any issues with the New Gradebook should be sent as a support case to helpdesk@bridgeport.edu. You will be notified when more information is available regarding that particular issue.

How do I report an issue as a bug?

First, ensure what you want to report is a bug, which means the feature is not performing as intended. What you may think is a bug actually may be intended as noted in the New Gradebook chapters of the Canvas Instructor Guide and the Canvas Student Guide.

If you feel like you need to report something that doesn’t seem right, email us at helpdesk@bridgeport.edu.
